Bryant Pond 4-H Camp

Maine Conservation School celebrates its 50th year of conservation education.

Bryant Pond, ME – February 28, 2006 – This year, Maine’s first conservation education program turns fifty years old.

In 1956 Lillian Rogers Waterhouse donated her summer residence on the shores of Lake Christopher (Bryant Pond) to the State of Maine to be used as a conservation education facility. That same year, Governor Muskie directed the Department of Fish and Game to work with Maine’s youth so they would have “favorable attitudes concerning the state’s natural resources.” ME F&G appointed Larry Stuart as the first Director of the Maine Conservation School. His vision statement is still the driving force behind what we do at MCS - “The ultimate purpose of our educational program is to instill in every individual an understanding of their dependence on natural resources, to arouse public conscience concerning them, and to stimulate public determination that the best conservation practices be followed.”

In celebration of this special occasion, MCS has planned several events throughout the year; an Alumni Open House re-union weekend May 20-21, a banquet / auction October 21, and more. If you are an MCS alum, we’d love to hear from you.

Since 1956, the Maine Conservation School has introduced children and adults to a unique blend of outdoor fun, environmental education, and practical outdoor skills. The MCS Summer Camp season runs from June 25th through August 25th. Program lengths vary from one to four weeks. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis and applications are being taken daily.
