Junior Maine Woodsman/Woodswoman (JMW) is the first step
in the JMG training program. JMW studies will lay the groundwork
for further training and progression to more advanced courses.
It encourages the students' continuing interest in more
advanced skills and specific knowledge.
The skills that these students will begin to develop include:
tool craft, canoeing safety and handling, individual shelter
& fire building, map & compass, map of Maine, trip
equipment & planning, Wilderness First Aid, back-country
cooking, group encampment, Maine Issues & Environmental
Concerns, plant & tree identification, hiking &
backpacking, Leave No Trace Minimum Impact Camping, and
general woodcraft. Each skill set is taught and assessed
by trained field staff. Students who successfully meet MCS
established standards are awarded a patch and are qualified
to advance to the next step; Maine Woodsman/Woodswoman.
