Bryant Pond 4-H Camp

Maine Conservation School announces the winner of the “Take Action for Wildlife” contest funded by a grant from Davis Conservation Foundation to help promote youth conservation projects.

Bryant Pond, ME – February 13, 2006 – The Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond, is pleased to announce the Grand Prize winner for the second season of “Take Action for Wildlife” neighborhood conservation project contest for young people that was funded, in part, by the Davis Conservation Foundation and L.L. Bean Inc.

This contest, originally funded in 2003 by a Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund grant, encourages Maine Conservation School campers to take action for wildlife at home.  These young people use the skills and concepts learned at MCS and apply them to an action project in their local neighborhoods, then submit a report on their project. The projects are judged by MCS staff and prizewinners receive outdoor gear donated by L.L. Bean and other prizes.  The Grand Prize winner, Lance Bishop, is a fourth grader from Frenchboro, Maine. Lance, a camper at MCS since 2003, won this contest with his conservation project that included locating an osprey nest, gaining landowner permission to pursue his project on someone else’s land, and posting warnings around the osprey nesting area to protect the chicks. The project is a culmination of many concepts that are taught to students of all ages at the Maine Conservation School. Lance will spend a day in the outdoors with Registered Maine Guide, Chris Manjourides, a frequent volunteer at MCS, possibly using the new L.L. Bean Streamlight 8’6” 5 weight rod outfit that he also won.

This year, the Maine Conservation School proudly celebrates 50 years of conservation education.  Our camp and school programs have introduced children and adults to a unique blend of outdoor fun, environmental education, and practical outdoor skills since 1956.
